Worshippers at Richards Memorial United Church say they've always got their power from on high.
Now they're connecting their energy source to the grid.

Its part of a commitment that began about year ago as an environmental statement, said Bob Shier, who leads
the church's green team and also is head of its finance committee. "We wanted to be green and protect the environment."

After the initial loan is paid off, the panels could be a source of income to the church. Richards Memorial, located on
Edgeworth Ave. just west of Argyle Mall in east London, is believed to be the first church building in London with an operational
solar array.

Not only does it make environmental and financial sense to the congregation, she said, it's also a statement that the church will still be part of the neighbourhood in 20 years. And it's a message to younger members of the congregation that faith can be compatible with the environmental lessons they're learning in school.

Although the front exterior of the church has a cross on it, and there's stained glass in the windows,
it's the solar panels on the sanctuary roof that are the building's most eye-catching feature.

Installer Direct Current Renewable Energy also has installed a similar system at a church in Hamilton. The Ontario Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program pays 80.2 cents a kilowatt-hour for rooftop solar generation, as the province works to shut down coal-fired power plants in favour of green energy.

In this instance, the first several years of revenue will be used to repay the $87,000 loan that enabled the congregation to buy the system. The loan came from the Middlesex Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.
